U16 NYCSFA Squad 2016-17

NYSCFA U16 Annual Report – 2016/17

The U16 team had another strong season, building on a solid start made at U15 level. The structure of the trial at the start of the season helped to ensure the selection process was thorough; this was supported throughout the season by Neville Warrior who helped to scout players that had missed out on the initial trial.

The Northern Counties League provided some close games throughout the season with each game being decided by one goal. We started off with a 2-2 draw at home to South Yorkshire, before beating Cumbria 2-1. We then lost two tight games on the bounce, 1-0 and 2-1, against Cleveland and Northumberland respectively. At this point Dan Ward joined the squad, adding a physical presence and focal point to the side. To stand a chance of progressing into the semi-final we had to beat Durham, which we did 2-1. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough and we finished 3rd in the league.

In the Inter-county cup we had a bye in the first round, before beating Durham 3-2. In the next round we suffered frustration with Humberside scoring a last minute winner to win 2-1. A disappointing end to the season but there were some strong performances throughout the year. Sean Thompson captained the side admirably from the heart of defence, playing alongside Mason Hawley who put in a number of accomplished performances.

We had a number of friendly games throughout the season which allowed the whole squad to be involved and to gain experience at a county level. This was well received by the players and parents and helped to maintain competition and interest within the squad. As the season went on the team grew stronger and players who weren’t initially involved in the matchday squad used the friendlies to play their way into it. This was particularly evident with Michael Rimmer and Dylan Muggleson-Thorbes who went onto play an important role in the team.

Thanks must go to Neville Wharrier, Sean Tasker and Rich Davis for all of their time and hard work. Withour their support, guidance and expertise it would be a great deal harder putting a competitive squad together.
