Harrogate and Craven

Report 2016-17

Harrogate and Craven District report 2016/17

This year has been my first year in charge as Harrogate and Craven secretary and what a brilliant year it has been!

As a district we organised an A&B league for years 8 through to 11.The launch of the new A&B leagues with FA Full time has meant that participation rates have been higher than ever and the smaller schools have been able to compete on a more level playing field.

Harrogate and Craven this year also ran two finals nights at Harrogate Town Football Club. The finals nights consisted of 6 area cup finals played over the two nights whilst also celebrating the winners of the Harrogate and Craven A&B leagues. Over the 2 nights we witnessed 6 finals fixtures with 7 different schools being represented, including Ermysteds and Boroughbridge.

Area cup winners

U12BOYS – Rossett

U13BOYS – St Aidan’s

U14BOYS – Harrogate Grammar

U15BOYS – Rossett

U16BOYS – Ermysteds

U19BOYS – Harrogate Grammar

Harrogate and Craven district schools have also dominated the majority of girl’s county cup competitions and Rossett Girls U14’s have reached the English Schools’ FA, Playstation schools’ national cup final, a monumental feat.

Our district representative teams have exceeded expectations, below is their account of the season; a massive thank you goes to all of the volunteers that assist with the district representative sides. Without their help the pupils wouldn’t have such fantastic opportunities. Next year we will again have 3 district representative sides’ u15, u14 and u13’s. We are also looking to try and set up a girl’s district team as well as an u12 boys programme.

I would also like to take this moment to thank all of the teachers, parents, carers, supporters and referees who give up their time to help nurture and develop local footballers in Harrogate and Craven. Your time and effort does not go unnoticed!

Harrogate & Craven SFA U13's – Will Golby

Formed in January 2017, the Under 13’s have made remarkable progress in this half of the season. To come together and play as they did in our first game after only one training session was an achievement in itself. 6 games on and we have now beaten 4 of the top 6 in the league, all of which we will meet in the league next season. It’s sure to be very competitive in the league and cups next season but we are very confident we can bring the league trophy home to Harrogate and be the first Harrogate & Craven team to do so!

Many thanks to our main sponsors for next season who have also been our main sponsor this season for our Under 15’s. We really appreciate your continued support and help in keeping the Harrogate & Craven colours together

Here’s to next season.

Harrogate & Craven SFA U14's – Martyn Shuter

Following in the footsteps of our big brothers the under 14’s District team formed in July / Aug 2016.

From a pool of 60+ players a squad of 18 boys was selected to represent the District pulling from 6 of the schools – the team have travelled all over the North of the country representing the schools of Harrogate and Craven.

The season has been considered a success – achieving qualification for the Yorkshire Cup semi-finals by coming third in the league , being beaten only once in the league. The group have received positive re-enforcement from other teams on the way we play football and conduct ourselves as a District – not bad for a team that has only been together for 6 months.

In the Semi Final we lost against a very strong Sheffield side 4-3 – the team showed great spirit to come back from being 3-0 down and if not for unusual mistakes could have progressed to the final where Sheffield won the Trophy.

Over the season we have also been invited to play a number of Academy football teams and more than hold our own against this teams and have seen two of the squad transition to secure places in Academies for the 2017 – 2018 season.

Plans are already being developed for next season and will hold refresher trials to continue the development of the boys as young men.

Many thanks for the support of the PE masters to get this off the ground , Boroughbridge School , Grammar and Fishers for the use of facilities and our age group sponsors Craven Storage Solutions , Stray FM and Ripley Castle – but not forgetting the parental support.

Together we start to put Harrogate back on the football map and will work with the schools to try and extend the number of age groups.

Key learnings for the group are teamwork and hard work really does pay off and we helped 2 players progress to Academy clubs during the season.

Cheers Mike and Martyn.

Harrogate & Craven SFA U15's – Norman Abusin

Harrogate & Craven SFA U15's started the 2016/17 well with some good results against strong opposition from the North East.  Unfortunately once the Yorkshire District League got under way the team were simultaneously plagued by a spate of injuries.  The spirit in the team shone through and thankfully the boys managed to grind out some hard thought victories in the league and ESFA National Cup.  Defeat against Sheffield on the last day of the season resulted in the team finishing 3rd in the Yorkshire League for the second successive season.  The top 4 finish earned the team a semi-final clash against Rotherham, which they overcame with a hard fought yet comprehensive 6-1 victory.  The reward was yet another (3rd consecutive year) Yorkshire Cup final against our old foes Sheffield.  Despite an outstanding performance by each and every player, the tie was decided by a single first half goal from Sheffield.

It is worthy of note that many of the boys have represented the district over the past 4 years, and recently 10 of the squad were justly rewarded by being selected to represent North Yorkshire SFA.  To mark the end of 4 very successful seasons the boy's will be embarking on a tour of Germany at the end of May.

Finally, a big thank must go out to sponsors particularly CNG, Waitrose and The Police Clubs of Great Briatin, coaches, parents and teachers for their support over the years.
